Aquaponics

Charlie Price from the social enterprise Aquaponics UK, explores the role aquaponics can play in the future of our collective food supply.
He provides an insight into both the applications for aquaponics but more specifically a new approach to urban agriculture, turning wastes into resources and transforming disused urban spaces to provide not only food, but resilient communities.

Murray Hallam's Practical Aquaponics - we actually design and build systems. Our plan sets are not just an imaginary system, but are taken off actual system builds we have completed and are working producing fish and plants.

Aquaponics Survival Community - NEWSLETTER: in depth Interviews Of The TOP MINDS in Aquaponics, the Latest Tools, Inventions And Discoveries In Aquaponics', Different Systems And Approaches With Aquaponics

Our community is about people learning, sharing and caring about aquaponics, farming, permaculture, organic growing and teaching as many people as we can about it.

Aquaponics in a nutshell - I got into aquaponics on a backyard scale back in 2007 and have ample backyard aquaponics experience to go along with my technical skills so in the past couple years I have gone on to start teaching plumbing and system design/layout skills for home scale aquaponics.  Last year I bought a farm and we moved the aquaponics last summer.  In the book I hope to produce I will be explaining how these different types of systems work and why and how you can do it for yourself.

Viridis Aquaponics - Partners Jon Parr and Drew Hopkins are attempting to create the largest commercial aquaponics operation in the country at a former rose nursery. If all goes as planned, they'll fill 350,000 square feet of greenhouses with fruits, vegetables and fish within 18 months, all grown in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner.

Colorado Aquaponics - Colorado Aquaponics is developing sustainable food systems for families and communities. Aquaponics grows both fish and plants in a recirculating system. For more information visit our website at www.coloradoaquaponics.com

Ouroboros Farms - Aquaponics preserves our fresh water resources and can produce food in water scarce environments. Aquaponics uses up to 90% less water than traditional soil-based farming.

The Aquaponic Source - is a Colorado based company with a mission to empower people to grow their own fish and vegetables in their homes and schools. We are both a retailer and a manufacturer of high quality aquaponic gardening products and educational materials

Aquaponics Association - Our mission is to promote the benefits of aquaponics through education and outreach. Join us! Get involved with the growing community of aquapons. Whether you are a commercial grower or DIY enthusaist, the Aquaponics Association has a place for you to collaborate and connect with other people who want to promote this incredible, earth-changing growing technique.

Green Acre Aquaponics - we decided to make the Guide from our Green Acre Complete Course available for those that can’t join us in person.   Its the next best thing to our intensive four day, hands on curriculum taught by folks that are farming every day and are profitable.  If you can’t attend and want to learn how to build a commercial hybrid farm, this manual will show you step by step how to do it.  This information isn’t available anywhere else!

Green Phoenix Farms - Have you ever thought that Aquaponics might be something that you would like to try, but you thought that you would like to try to design your own system? Even if you already know a bit about Aquaponics, this workshop will give you a much more solid grasp on the specific mechanics of how to appropriately design systems and make them run as efficiently as possible.

FASTonline - Faith And Sustainable Technologies is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation formed to assist the poor of this world. It is our desire to share the gospel, and hope, in practical ways by demonstrating a lifestyle that pleases God and sharing information that can empower the poor to receive the blessings of God firsthand. You can download the very popular barrleponics manuel at the link below. This will give you clear direction on how to build your system.

Internet of Farming - Rik Kretzinger spent his college years studying horticulture, he began to tinker with aquaponics (fishfarming + hydroponics), sensors and the open-source microcontroller Arduino to create an automated garden that could compete with commercial farms. APDuino allows Kretzinger to read the sensors in his garden without any programming. Now Kretzinger's garden can send him tweets or Facebook updates if something is going wrong and Kretzinger can adjust the water flow, pH and temperature from a smartphone. He's created a prototype tower (PVC structures similar to those in our videos of Rob Torcellini's greenhouse and of rooftop hydroponics on Manhattan restaurant Bell, Book & Candle).

Mediamatic - Making the shopping list for the first system

Backyard aquaponics - Here’s the perfect opportunity to dip your toe into the aquaponic life for only a very small outlay with a neat little barrel system that you can make yourself.

Falcon Aquaponics - we believe that it's hard to improve on the work that Nature can do.  With that in mind, we are working to create a sustainable "ecosystem" that will allow us to locally grow both fish and vegetables organically.

aquaponics BIO filter - you can use the plants as a biofilter to absorb all the fish waste. This allows the fish to grow without the need for an expensive artificial filtration system. In addition, the fish waste is used to grow the plants, thereby doing away with the need for expensive fertilizers. What you get is a perfectly natural, self-sustaining, symbiotic system that guarantees you fresh fish and vegetables.

microbe life hydro - Our products have the following:

  • Photosynthetic Bacteria - promoting photosynthesis
  • Autotrophic bacteria for improved CO2 conversion
  • Rare earth water soluble humates - mined from organic matter, not leonardite which is not water soluble
  • Ecto - Mycorrhizal fungi
  • Nitrogen-fixing bacteria to allow for reduced chemical inputs and conversion of nitrogen present in the atmosphere into forms usable by plants, lawns, trees and shrubs
  • A wide culture consortium to restore balance to the soil web

ecogrohydro - We provide the equipment and supplies necessary to construct and maintain your own aquaponics system.

iron and aquaponics - as soon as ferrous iron becomes soluble in aerobic envrionments it is often oxidized, becoming ferric iron or reacts with other compounds to become biologically unavailable.

Tilapia Farming - CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems

What you need to begin:

  1. Making your pond
  2. Preparing your pond
  3. Managing your pond
  4. Harvesting

The blue-green box - The box holds 4 grow beds which are plastic planters filled with gravel. Water floods the four grow-beds on timed intervals via a programmable timer and small pump (if the roots were constantly flooded they would drown). As this happens, the plants extract the nutrients from the fish waste and the gravel or other inert substrate that the roots are in, get flooded so the roots will not dry out. Rather than using one large grow-bed, I switched to cups to allow for easy access to the interior of the Blue Green Box.

waterlife - Tropical Freshwater FISH DISEASE CHART

pond algae control - Long before the advent of chemicals, barley straw has been used to retard algae growth. Some recent university studies in the U.S. have indicated that it does indeed have potential to do this, but it seems to work best as a deterrent rather than an outright treatment for existing algae.
